Think of that number this way. 77% of Americans don’t believe the nearly trillion dollar stimulus package – more than has been spent on the entire Iraq War – helped the economy.
Breaking that question down even further, the same percentage, 77%, of Independents don’t believe the stimulus has made the economy better. Almost as amazing, that number among Democrats is 65%.
Think about that again.
65% of Democrats don’t believe their President’s signature policy initiative to solve the signature problem facing the nation worked.
The CBS Poll also highlighted that the Economy/Jobs are far and away the top issues on people’s minds. At 38%, its next closest competition is War/Iraq/Afghanistan at 7%.
Pushing Democrats on the stimulus is a clear and easily communicated way to invigorate the GOP base, swing Independent voters our way, and at quite possibly dissuade Democrats from even bothering to vote for the Party that failed them.
In other words, as I first began pushing 14 months ago, the stimulus has the potential to be a political winner of massive proportions for fiscal conservatives.
